newyearseveNow that Christmas is behind us for another year, it’s time to look ahead to New Year’s Eve activities.  I have one, and only one, activity to recommend to you and your family.

Since 1987 the Arts Council of Oklahoma City has sponsored Opening Night in downtown OKC.  And, while I’m on the subject of sponsors let me thank MidFirst Bank, the Arts Council’s official sponsor and some of their annual sponsors Sonic, Ozarka, The Oklahoman, Devon Energy Corporation and Chesapeake Energy Corporation.   If it weren’t for these dedicated sponsors, we wouldn’t have near the number of fantastic family activities available to us.

Opening Night starts on December 31st from 7 p.m. to midnight throughout the downtown area.  Some activities take plae at various venues and some are just out on the city streets.  The final countdown begins at 11:30 p.m. with fireworks scheduled for the stroke of midnight as we enter 2010.

Wristbands for the evening are $8 in advance and $10 if you wait until the night of the event.  Children under 5 are admitted free.  These wristbands can be purchased at area 7-Eleven stores, Homelands, MidFirst Banks and Mathis Brothers Furniture or at these venues on New Year’s Eve.

Last year was my families first experience with this non-alcoholic New Year’s Eve activity and we had a ball!  There are musical acts, a scavenger hunt and fireworks.  Here’s a complete list of the performers.  Believe me when I say there is something for everyone!  Oh, when you pick up your wristbands, ask for an event program as well.

Have a happy and healthy 2010!

For all your New Year’s Eve supplies visit any of these fine retail stores in the Oklahoma City area.
