Oklahoma City Kayaking

I’m not a fanatic when it comes to kayaking. I just enjoy the outdoors and a chance to get a little exercise and chat with some friends. That’s why I am so thankful that the Oklahoma River, south of Bricktown, has been developed in recent years, largely in part because of the Chesapeake Boathouse, a $3.5 million development funded by the Chesapeake Energy Corporation. It’s just the right location and atmosphere for me to get out on the river and enjoy myself!
When I first started kayaking I purchased the wrong kayak for me and it just about turned me off to paddling for good. So, I wanted to share some of the important information that you should/will be asked when you start your search for your first kayak. A few questions that you should be prepared to answer are:
- 1. Where are you going to use the kayak?
- 2. Who is going to use the kayak?
- 3. How often do you see yourself using the kayak?
- 4. How much paddling have you done?
I found that a well informed and experienced sales person at your local sport shop should be able to guide you to a few different kayak models that may fit your needs. Just remember, there is no boat that is perfect for everything. Most beginning recreational kayakers should be in a boat less than 14 ft long. It should also have exceptional secondary stability to keep you from capsizing as you learn how to handle the kayak. Also, seek out those little “pointers for paddling” from the paddling expert at the shop you select. This can significantly increase your learning curve and will allow you to start enjoying kayaking even more quickly.
You should definitely budget for this purchase. It’s what I would consider a major one. Also, the accessories that go along with kayaking are really necessary and will eat a hole in your budget if you haven’t planned in advance for them. You may need such items as a paddle(s), a personal floatation device, a kayak carrier, clothing, and safety equipment. These accessories can make or break a successful outing.
So whether you’re an extreme or recreational kayaker, hit the river and enjoy yourself! And don’t forget that you should expect to get wet!
