On Tuesday, December 8th, 2009, the folks in Oklahoma City voted to approve the MAPS 3 initiative with around 54% of the vote. One of its biggest supporters has been the Mayor, Mick Cornett. The officials at the Oklahoma County Election Board said that voter turnout was about 31%. I guess this is a higher turnout than for most local elections. The final count numbers were 40,956 Yes and 34,465 No.
This penny sales tax will stay with us for seven years and nine months starting April of 2010. The Mayor was quoted as saying, “Oklahoma City’s golden age continues”. This extra revenue is going to continue the citywide progress that has been made since the first MAP initiative was passed back in 1993. The mayor hopes that the proposed downtown park will be one of the first projects to be prioitized and started.
The Oklahoma City area currently has many beautiful parks and recreation spots for its residents to enjoy.
